Post-graduation, David taught art at the post-secondary
level, constantly inspiring his students. After over a decade of teaching,
David was laid off due to financial cut backs at the school. Lacking a sense
direction, David took the opportunity to pursue his dream of writing and
illustrating his first book. He submitted his book to more than 20 publishers,
Eulalie and the Hopping Head, where it was eventually published in 1982[1]. After the success of his first book, he
would go on to write and illustrate more children’s books and collaborate with
authors using his illustrations to bring their books to life. In addition to
making books, David has made several publications of his illustrations in The
New Yorker and The New York Times. He met his wife and best friend Sarah
Stewart at the university they worked at and encouraged her to write books of
her own, much of which he providing the artwork for. He currently resides in
south west Michigan where he continues to write and illustrate to this day.
